Dr. Kanaris holds a doctorate
in Clinical/School Psychology. He is a N.Y.S. licensed psychologist and the
American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists certifies him
as a sex therapist. He is a graduate Post-Doctoral Fellow of the Institute of
Rational Emotive Therapy in NYC where he served as a senior clinician, training
supervisor and faculty member. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of
Psychological Specialties with forensic specialty in family, marital and
domestic relations granted by the American College of Forensic Examiners.
Dr. Kanaris currently serves as the Public Education Campaign Coordinator for
Suffolk County Psychological Association. In this capacity, he has been the
featured guest on many live interviews and call-in Cablevision telecasts where
he has discussed a variety of topics including relationships and sexuality. He
has commented on breaking news on News 12 Long Island involving a Columbia
University sexuality study. He has appeared on radio programs from San Francisco
to Houston discussing various topics in sexuality and mental health.
Dr. Kanaris is also the co-host of an educational video series “Psychology and
You.” He has been interviewed in numerous newspaper columns and feature articles
in the areas of family, parenting, adolescence, and sexuality in periodicals
such as Newsday and Glamour Magazine. Dr. Kanaris has written for the Health
Page for FHM (For Him Magazine) where he responded to questions on sexuality and
intimacy.Dr. Kanaris has been interviewed in numerous webzine articles including
Healthgate.com and Healthscoutnews. He was interviewed in Newsday regarding the
local response to the tragedy at Columbine High Schooland on New York WB11 News
in reaction to 9/11. He has presented at the New York State Psychological
Association on Psychology and the Media: Educating the Public.
As Clinical Director of Hewlett Consultation Center from 1981 through 1999, Dr.
Kanaris’ responsibilities included psychotherapy, sex/marital counseling,
adolescent counseling, and coordination of clinical services, professional
training and community education. Dr. Kanaris directs the Sexual Diagnostic
Program at his office in Smithtown, Long Island since January 1998. In addition
to clinical practice, he consults for health facilities in geriatrics and
conducts forensic independent psychological evaluations.
