The Institute for Sexuality & Intimacy (ISI) offers treatment of sexual dissatisfaction, sexual dysfunction, and sexual addiction.  We treat heterosexual, gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals and couples. Our treatment approach emphasizes the individual growth of each partner as well as the enhancement of the couple relationship.

We work with both members of a couple whenever possible.  We have found that when one partner experiences sexual difficulties, the other partner generally influences and is affected by these problems.  However, it is possible to successfully conduct sex therapy with an individual.

Although there are often multiple factors contributing to sexual difficulties, we begin sex therapy by addressing the most immediate and specific causes, such as communication difficulties, being “time starved” due to life’s stresses, and performance anxiety. When indicated, therapy can then focus on more complex causes, including difficulties with trust, control, and intimacy.

Staff All members of the clinical staff at The Institute for Sexuality and Intimacy have between 10 and 30 years experience as therapists and specialize in the treatment of sexuality and intimacy.  All are independently licensed clinicians with offices located throughout the Greater Boston area.

The ISI maintains a rigorous program of continuing education and advanced training in state-of-the-art sex therapy techniques for its staff.

Commonly Encountered Sexual Difficulties

  • Low or inhibited sexual desire, persistent reduction in sexual interest, or total disinterest in sex.

  • Sexual incompatibility or unsatisfying sex.

  • Impotence (erectile difficulties).

  • Premature, delayed, or no ejaculation.

  •  Inability to experience orgasm (anorgasmia).

  •  Pain during intercourse or orgasm.

  •  Vulvadinia, vestibulitis, etc.

  • Penetration difficulties (vaginismus).

  • Sexual aversion or phobias (possibly resulting from sexual assault or abuse).

  • Sexual addictions and compulsions.

  • Difficulties caused by medical illness, physical handicaps or medications.

Treatment Strategies
The Institute for Sexuality and Intimacy
uses an integrated approach based on the work of Masters and Johnson, Helen Singer Kaplan, Joseph LoPiccolo, David Schnarch, John Gottman, Harville Hendrix (Imago Therapy), Francine Shapiro (EMDR), Richard Schwartz (IFS) and others.  Our highly experienced clinicians are extensively trained to provide treatment that encompasses interpersonal, psychodynamic, and cognitive and behavioral approaches, including specific sexual therapy techniques.

The Individualized Treatment Plan May Include:

  •  Identifying & addressing problematic aspects of the sexual interaction.

  •  Exploring sexual attitudes and experiences.

  • Examining issues from the past which might affect the present.

  • Identifying what aspects of the couple's interaction may trigger strong   emotional reactions.

  •  Relaxation techniques.

  • Communication and assertiveness training.

  • Exploring difficulties with trust.

  • Dealing with struggles over control.

  • Developing mutual empathy, honesty, intimacy, and passion.

  • Structured homework assignments.

  • Sexual education, including suggested readings and videos.

  • Referrals for medical evaluations and/or other treatments as needed.

When there is a history of sexual abuse or trauma difficulties with sexual desire and functioning are common.  Our therapists are specifically trained to address these sensitive issues.  Couples therapy and education about the impact of the abuse are combined with sex therapy to promote sexual healing.  In these situations, the active and empathic participation of both partners is particularly important.

Consultation & Training Staff members of the Institute for Sexuality and Intimacy are available to consult with referring clinicians and to make educational presentations for professionals and the community. The director, Suki Hanfling, has given over 275 presentations on couples therapy, sexuality and sex therapy in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Suki has also been a guest speaker on numerous television and radio programs and is frequently interviewed by the media.
